Meaning of Tafari

Greetings one and all in the name of His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie I. I pray that this reaches you in good spirits. In the world, there are groups of parents that are very spiritually driven, they name their children with names that is noble and has a great meaning, the bible declares in Proverbs 22:1 that “A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold.”

This article will be a multi-part series to the names of His Majesty and with that being said I would like to share what Tafari means. Tafari is the given first name to the man the world knows as Haile Selassie I. A name that was given to the child with the Government on his shoulder is of greatness. It is an Amharic name and it means “To be reverenced, feared, respected, and inspires awe.” Proverbs 4:4, 9:10, Psalms 33:8, Psalms 119:16, Hebrews 12:28 and quite a few more, speaks about being in awe and godly fear.

The Webster’s Revised Unabridged Dictionary defines Awe as

1. (n.) Dread; great fear mingled with respect.

2. (n.) The emotion inspired by something dreadful and sublime; an undefined sense of the dreadful and the sublime; reverential fear, or solemn wonder; profound reverence.

3. (v. t.) To strike with fear and reverence; to inspire with awe; to control by inspiring dread.

We see that even the Amharic name, Tafari was prophetic in the symbolism of the locs that InI as Rastafari grow that some also call dreads. For many of I has grew our locs or dreads to represent the fear of the Most High and the coming Judgement upon Babylon. (Exodus 15:16)

I pray that the words that I typed, and the iditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord Jah Ras Tafari Haile Selassie I, my strength and my redeemer. Shalom, Selamta, Ase
